DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS, AN IMPORTANT PROGRESS ON THE TAXONOMY OF FRESHWATER CLADOCERANS FROM MEXICO HAS BEEN REACHED. NOT ONLY NEW RECORDS HAVE BEEN FOUND BUT MANY NEW TAXA WERE DISCOVERED AND DESCRIBED. THE KNOWLEDGE OF ANOMOPODS AND CTENOPODS, FORMELY NAMED "CLADOCERA", INCREASED WITH 70 NEW RECORDS, EIGHT NEW SPECIES AND NEW GENUS. THE LATTER CONSTITUTES THE FIRTS BLIND ANOMOPOD DESCRIBED FROM THE AMERICAS. MOST FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT FRESHWATER ZOOPLANKTON DOES NOT SHOW A COSMOPOLITAN DISTRIBUTION AND EMPHAZISES THE TRANSITIONAL STATUS OF MEXICO BETWEEN THE NEARTIC AND THE NEOTROPICAL BIOGEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS. THESE NEW TAXA INDICATE ALSO A STRONG ENDEMISM OF SEVERAL SPECIES, AS A RESULT OF THE COMPLEX GEOMORPHOLOGY OF SOUTHEASTERN MEXICO, RESULTING IN A WIDE VARIETY OF ISOLATED ENVIRONMENTS. IN PARTICULAR, LOWLANDS OF THE SOUTHEAST SHOW A STRONG AFFINITY WITH THE SOUTH AMERICAN FAUNA. THE CURRENT CHECKLIST FOR THE AREA INCLUDES 37 TAXA, WITH 11 NEW RECORDS: Diaphanosoma brevireme, D. fluviatile, Pseudosida ramosa, Simocephalus mixtus, Onchobunops tuberculatus, Guernella raphaelis, Chydorus nitidilus, Notoalona cf. globulosa, Alonella brasiliensis AND Leydigiopsis curvirostris.
