Resumen

Autonomous students are often thought of as different from normal students. However, outside the classroom, all university students are autonomous in some measure. They vote, get married, have children, and hold down jobs among other responsibilities. This paper uses documentary sources to explore how student autonomy can be reinforced and accommodated in the classroom, as well as how the effect of educational traditions and conceptions that undermine autonomy may be minimized. It is suggested that active support for autonomy may improve the learning experience not only in university but in future learning situations and throughout life as well.
