This paper takes a specifically professional approach to issues which need to be resolved in both pre-service and in-service education for language teachers. The type of professionalism which guides the analysis presented is represented in the UK by the practice of architecture and medicine. In the literature on English language teaching (ELT), professionalism is generally thought to be a good thing and is variously thought to prepare student teachers for what they will have to do as teachers, or to be competent academics. In-service education is thought to be beneficial when it leads to personal and teaching skill development, particularly through reflective practice. This paper discusses positive and negative aspects of both in-service and pre-service teacher education.
