This paper presents the main findings of a study in comparative professionalism between ELT practitioners in Mexico and the professions of architecture and medicine in the UK. The conceptual issues surrounding the definition and measurable indicators of professionalism are discussed. It is shown that while there is no consensus in the literature, the emergence of a definition of professionalism as a mechanism for the accountable delivery of expert services is helpful in making meaningful comparisons between different professions. It was found that ELT practitioners in Mexico share more with architects and doctors in the UK than may be supposed from differences in entry requirements to the professions. However the differences are significant and point to ways in which ELT professionalism might be improved.
